The Becker youth wrestling team advanced to the NYWA state tournament in Rochester after taking sixth in last weekend’s Region 3 tournament in Waconia.
At regions, the team wrestled teams from Wayzata, St. Michael-Albertville, Annandale-Maple Lake, Waconia and Hastings.
Becker will compete in Rochester April 1 and 2. The team is coached by Luke Fox, Tim Kujawa, Matt Kuschel, Mike Duncumbe and Cody Stangler.
Becker also had wrestlers successfully compete in the individual regional competitions March 24 and 25, qualifying them for state. Wrestlers must place in the top three of their bracket to advance to the state tournament.
First Place Champions
Second-grader Bennett Kujawa was the champion of the first-second grade, 54-lb bracket; fourth-grader Owen Angell was the champion of the third-fourth grade, 80-lb bracket; fourth-grader Cash Stortz was the champion of the third-fourth grade, 72-lb bracket; fourth-grader Kaden Nicolas was the champion of the third-fourth grade, 64-lb bracket.
Seventh-grader Mason Doucette was the champion of the seventh-eighth grade, 95-lb bracket; eighth-grader Kylen Rish was the champion of the seventh-eighth grade, 115-lb bracket; eighth-grader Caden Dewall won the seventh-eighth grade, 125-lb bracket; eighth-grader Brayden Weber was the champion of the seventh-eighth grade, 235-lb bracket.
Second Place
Placing second in their brackets were pre-schooler Rylan Kujawa; fourth-grader Landen Kujawa; sixth-grader Adam Jurek; and seventh-grader Ethan Anderson.
Third Place
Placing third in their brackets were kindergartener Odin Duncumbe; first-grader Blayne Kuschel; second-grader Boston Kuschel; fourth-grader Isaac Deluge; sixth-grader Dylan Weber; sixth-grader Tyson Ricker and eighth-grader Lukas Paulson.
Wrestlers who place fourth-sixth in their bracket at regions may compete in the state invitational competition. Kindergartner Eli Humphrey, kindergartner Logan Nesheim, second-graders Tyler Hall and Lance Lysdal all qualified for the invite.
