Younger BL wrestlers do well at Regionals

The younger Big Lake wrestlers had a chance to compete against some of their regional competitors last weekend.

At the MNGWL Region 7 Qualifier last Saturday, the Big Lake ninth grade and younger boys finished ninth of 16 teams.

Rier Fox took the title at 152 pounds. After a bye, the freshman beat Cordell Terrell of Sauk Rapids-Rice, 16-9. He beat Brooks Miller of Paynesville, 18-1, then pinned Owen Willis of Sartell-St. Stephen in the championship match at 2:33.

Jaylen Rand won two matches and finished fifth at 133 pounds. He pinned Mason  Gorecki of Mora at 2:28 and he won by medical forfeit over Aiden Medic of Pierz in his final match.

Harlen Bieniek won two matches and finished fifth at 172 pounds. He beat Noah Czeck of Sauk Rapids-Rice by medical forfeit and pinned Caleb Ritter of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at 1:24.

Iain Cooper won three matches and finished fifth at 189 pounds. He pinned Levi Shamia of St. Cloud Tech at 4:15. He beat Easton Braun of Paynesville, 8-4, and beat Mason Lumley of Becker, 10-8.

Ryker Jackman-Shaw won two matches and finished sixth at 127 pounds. He beat Austin Weber of Sauk Rapids-Rice, 13-1 and he beat Kellan Colford of Becker, 17-0.

The Hornets finished eighth in the Region 7 & 8 Girls Qualifier with two Big Lake girls competing.

Ninth-grader Cora Rand took the title at 124 pounds. After a bye, she pinned Teagan Schmit of Princeton at 0:43, then pinned Trinity Kurzenberger of United North Central at 0:45 in the championship match.

Gracyn Mayer won two matches and placed third at 130 pounds. The seventh-grader  pinned Brooklyn Pederson of Moorhead at 4:14 and pinned Kylie Niemi of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton at 0:38.

The Hornet varsity wrestlers had their triangular meet at Albany postponed from last Thursday until Feb. 2. They wrestled in a dual meet at Zimmerman Thursday and at Howard Lake Friday, results next week.
