Wrestlers Celebrate Great Season With Awards Banquet

The Becker Bulldog wrestling team held their  banquet and awards dinner Thursday night to celebrate another very successful season.

Among the awards presented Thursday was the following: All-Conference - Josh Lumley, Cody Ferris, Zack Zimmer, Bobby Lee, and Mason Olson; Honorable Mention - Chris Weberg and Casey Vesledhal; Rookie Of The Year - Lumley; Most Improved (JV) - Trevor Goodrich and Josiah Borst; Most improved (varsity) - Olson; Most Outstanding (JV) - Goodrich; Most Outstanding (varsity) - Bobby Lee.
 
Head Coach Matt Aho plans to pick new captains for the team early next year.
 
The wrestlers finished 5-2 (second place) in the Granite Ridge Conference and were named conference academic champions with an overall team GPA od 3.58.
Some highlights for the year include a 2-1 record at the Foley Duals Dec. 7. On the weekend of Dec. 13-14, the boys finished in 15th place with 49 points and had five wrestlers finish in the top 10 (Caleb Vekved, Cody Ferris, Tyler Madsen, Goodrich and Vesledahl).
 
At the Rumble on the Red tournament in Fargo, the team placed 32nd with 58 points and Olson was the team’s top wrestler, garnering a sixth place medal.
At the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Invitational Jan. 3, the team took third place (130.5 points) and had three wrestlers take first place (Vekved, Ferris and Lee), three wrestlers take second (Zack Zimmer, Olson and Weberg), one take third (Vesledahl) and one take fourth (Tyler France).
 
At the Albany Tournament Feb. 7, the Bulldogs took second place (167.5 points) and had 13 wrestlers finish in the top six places (Lumley - 3rd, Kevin Andres - 5th, Vekved - 2nd, Jaylin Hildebrandt - 5th, Lee - 1st, Andrew Berglund - 6th, Blake Paulson - 5th, Ferris - 1st, Zimmer - 1st, Weberg - 3rd, Vesledahl - 3rd, Olson - 1st and Madsen - 5th).
 
At the Section 6AA tournament, 12 Bulldog wrestlers placed in the top six places of their weight classes including, Lumley (2nd), Colten Demant (6th), Ferris (2nd), Zimmer (1st), Madsen (3rd), Olson (1st), Berglund (6th), Vekved (3rd), Hildebrandt (4th), Lee (2nd), Weberg (4th) and Vesledahl (3rd).
 
Becker had five wrestlers make state (Lumley, Zimmer, Olson, Ferris and Lee). Lee was the only wrestler to place (6th).
 
Vesledahl finished with the most team points (164) and most pins (19). Lee had the most takedowns on the team (60). Zimmer had the most N3 with 18, Vekved the most N2 with 10, the most reversals with 26 and Ferris  the most E1s with 44.
 
Vekved completed his junior year tallying 50 wins. Ferris achieved 50th, 60th and 75th wins in his junior year, Zimmer got his 100th win at the section individual tournament last month and Lee got his 50th, 60th and 75th wins this year while garnering 25 pins.
 
The Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association 2104 Scholarship Recipient went to Zack Zimmer.
