Wisconsin pitcher wins “Pot-Of-Gold” Horseshoe Tournament

Donna Berquam of Cumberland, Wisconsin, won six of seven games to capture the Class A title two weekends ago at the Becker courts.

Berquam hit ringers at a 54.29% clip.

In her first game, Berquam beat Myron Vanderweyst of Rice, 24-22. Myron is the current Minnesota State Elders Champion and he finished second at five wins and two losses, with a 52.86% average.

Berquam’s only loss came at the hand of Minnesota’s current women’s champion, Janet Larson of Evansville.

Third place went to Tom Prokop of West St. Paul, who finished 4-3. Class B Champion was Jerry Werk of Donnely. He finished 6-1 with a 47.5% average. Local pitcher Russ Girtz took second place with a 5-2 record, and Don Claseman of St. Cloud was 4-3 for the third playing spot.

Rick Wright, the former president of the Minnesota Horseshoe Association, captured the Class C title, going 5-0 and averaging 27%. Two Becker pitchers took second and third, with Dennis Barut finishing second at 4-1 and Anthony Stach third with a 2-3 record.

Becker will be holding its second annual spring tournament on Saturday, April 15 at the Becker American Legion building.
