The Big Lake Hornet football team dropped to 0-3 on the season with a crushing defeat to Willmar Friday night at home.
Final score was 50-16.
The game started off bad for the Hornets as E. Swierenga of Willmar intercepted a pass in the early moments of the game and returned it 35 yards to the end zone to go up 7-0.
Four minutes later, the Cardinals got the ball back and proceeded to march the field until C. Gregory reached paydirt from five yards out to go up 13-0 (Xp was unsuccessful).
Still in the first quarter, R. Trevino of Willmar scored another TD from five yards out and the Cardinals were up 20-0 with 4:39 left in the first quarter.
When Big Lake got the ball back, unfortunately their punt was blocked and D. Goblirsch of Willmar scored on the return. With still a minte and a half left in the first, R. Trevino rambled 21 yards for another score and by the end of the first, Willmar had a lead of 34-0.
Mercifully, the Cardinals managed just one TD in the second quarter when Trevino scored his second of three TDs with five minutes left until halftime.
At 40-0 to start the second half, Big Lake got on the scoreboard when J. Mallberg ran 74 yards for a TD followed by a successful two-point conversion to make it 40-8.
In the fourth, Big Lake again tallied a TD when V. Dailey caught a 24 yard pass from D. Harris to score. Another successful two-pointer mad the score 40-16.
Trevino notched his third TD of the night from five yards out to extend the lead to 47-16, then Willmar’s E. May nailed a 35 yard field goal to cap the night’s scoring at 50-16.
Big Lake’s Jonah Mallberg had three carries for 75 yards to lead all Hornet rushers. Mallberg was also the leading receiver as he hauled in three ctaches for 45 yards and one TD.
On defense, Wuoson Nehwah had three tackles and two assists. JC Cortez-Sanchez had one tackle, one tackle for loss and five assists.
