Wild Game Goes To The Bulldogs, 56 44

Friday night’s football game in Chisago Lakes featured two offenses that looked unstoppable and two defenses that looked like swiss cheese. Seven lead changes highlighted the first half as well as numerous big plays, turnovers, long runs and fake punts  throughout as Becker prevailed, 56-44.

First Half

Quarterback Josh Fobbe looked like Johnny Unitas as he tallied three TDs through the air — two going to WR Lucas Dertinger and one to Bryce Boser.

Running Back Sydney Boros was effective, too as he scored on a 12-yard run for Becker’s second score of the night.

Chisago Lakes’ running game gave the Bulldogs fits in the first half as Manuel Rosario, Cole Glenna, Chase Hemme and Peter Vitalis found gaping holes, while scoring three times.

The toughest player to corral was Chisago Lakes QB, Henry Trost, as his deftness and speed caused havoc with Becker lineman, linebackers and backers. He had two 70+ runs for scores and was elusive like  a young Barry Sanders.

Becker was able to get the better of their chances and headed into the locker room with a four-point lead at 28-24.

Second Half

Another big play commenced after halftime as Trost ran 57 yards on the team’s second play to pull ahead of the Bulldogs at 31-28.

The teams traded punts on the next two possessions until Becker took control with a little over eight minutes to go. A long punt return by Boros put the ball to the Wildcat 25.

Fobbe led his squad those final 25 yards with a couple passes, a couple scrambles and then a one-yard dive for a TD to put the Bulldogs back on top at 35-31.

Glenna gave Becker the ball back when he took a handoff on the Wildcat’s third play of their next drive and coughed it up at his own 36 yard line. Becker pounced on the loose ball and on the team’s second play, Fobbe rolled out and couldn’t find an open receiver, so he dashed to the end zone for the score. The successful PAT put the Bulldogs up 42-31 halfway through the third quarter.

Three plays later and on another wild play, Trost took the snap as punter and took off to the left, outrunning the defenders to the first down marker and diving for the yardage.

He killed the Bulldogs again when he faked the handoff two plays later and slid through several tacklers for a 54-yard TD, his third TD of more than 50 yards in the game.

Chisago Lakes went for a two-point conversion but failed, so the scoreboard read 42-37 with the fourth quarter looming.

The Bulldogs took possession of the ball in their own territory after the kickoff and failed to move the ball. Fobbe dropped back to punt, but he did to Chisago Lakes what they did to Becker when he faked the punt and rambled for a first down. Two plays later, Fobbe found Alex Blomgren deep downfield at the 20 for a big gain. Moments later, Boros caught a short pass from Fobbe and broke over the goal line for Becker’s seventh TD.

With the game going back-and-forth just about every possession, Becker threw a little twist in the game with a surprise, successful on-side kick to Chisago Lake’s 49-yard line.

A personal foul call sent Becker back 15 yards, to which Fobbe heaved a bomb to Blomgren 40 yards downfield.  Blomgren got a hand on the ball, then saw the ball bounce off his helmet into the air ahead of him. Expertly, he dove a good five yards to haul the ball into his arms.

What a catch!

A couple plays later, the Bulldogs scored once again when Fobbe ran around the left end to paydirt to score his third running TD and seventh TD as QB to put Becker up 56-37 with 7:54 to go.

Chisago Lakes responded with another scoring drive of their own to make the score 56-44 with  five minutes to go.

The Wildcats attempted an on-side kick, but it failed to travel the 10 yards and Becker took over.

Becker controlled the ball the rest of the way and escaped with the huge win.
