With the Spring sports season upon us, Mother Nature is doing everything she can to hold onto Winter and disrupt the Bulldogs from going outside. With games and matches lurking in a week, the Becker boys and girls sports teams have been forced to practice their trades indoors under the roof of the gymnasium, the fieldhouse and wrestling rooms.
The boys and girls golf teams have been taking swings and fine-tuning their strokes in preparation for the upcoming golf season. With snow still on the ground and a forecast for possibly more, their first few matches may be in jeopardy.
The boys and girls baseball and softball teams have been utilizing the fieldhouse to field flyballs and grounders and take some swings in the cages. The fields outdoors are far from close to ready and again, games will likely be postponed the first week or so.
Softball has a game scheduled for Thursday and baseball is set to start April 10.
For the track teams, it’s a little different. They have the capacity to hold their early meets indoors at the fieldhouse, if the need arises. For now, they are using the facility to run, jump and throw before the season kicks off April 3 in Foley.
Boys tennis may also be forced to find space in the fieldhouse to play their home matches until the snow and water gets cleared off the tennis courts. Their first match is Thursday in Monticello and first home match is Saturday at home.
Girls and boys lacrosse teams are rehearsing for their seasons indoors as well, with the boys scheduled to start the season April 20 and the girls April 19.
The seven-day forecast for the Becker area indicates the possibility of light snow Monday through Thursday with temperatures hovering around the mid 30’s. The first 50+º day expected in the long range forecast doesn’t appear until April 13.
