The Becker Bulldog girls volleyball team edged the Rogers Royals in five sets to take the nonconference match Tuesday afternoon.
It was the first time the Bulldogs had defeated the Royals since 2005.
“ It was the girls’ mission to beat them this year,” said first-year Head Coach Kristina Sloan. “They fought those five games to the very end.”
Game scores were 25-17, 17-25, 25-22, 21-25 and 15-11.
Kalie Jergens had 10 kills, Sam Angell had eight kills and Kalley Anderson had eight kills and eight blocks to lead Becker (1-0).
“Our hitting was consistent from our hitters and Alexa Hanowski was a stud in the back row, picking up nearly everything,” said the proud coach of the 16 digs Hanowski displayed. “The game came down to who made less mistakes.”
Jergens also had six blocks and 12 digs. Angell had two blocks and 15 digs to go along with her eight kills, Brinley Koller had eight assists in 18 attempts and one service ace. Daisy Kent had 11 assists in 21 attempts and three service aces and Brynn Barthel had four kills, six blocks and three digs.
“ It’s a great start to our season!” said Sloan.
Up next for the girls is their first home match of the year — Tuesday against Monticello. They travel to Zimmerman to take on the Thunder Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
Next Saturday, they have a home tournament against Eden Valley-Watkins, Lester Prairie, Rockford and Wadena-Deer Creek. The first matches start at 9 a.m. in the main gym.
