Turkey Toss Horseshoe Tourney held in Becker Saturday

Horseshoe pitching is going well in Becker this winter under the direction of Russ Girtz of rural Big Lake and Michelle Foard of Blaine.

The Pumpkin Patch Tournament was held Oct. 18, and the Reindeer Classic will be on Dec. 9. Tournaments will also be held next January, February and March. There are a few indoor courts in Minnesota, so pitchers come from all over the state to pitch in Becker. Also, two leagues are playing on Tuesday nights.

In the Turkey Toss Tourney held last Saturday, Michael Timm of Chanhassen went 7-0 to win the Class C tournament with 12.5% ringers. Second place went to Scott Chalmers from Northern Minnesota, and Becker’s Wayne Stach took third with 11.43% and a 4.5-2.5 record.

Roger Lodermeier and Peter Heltunen of Mountain Iron tied for the Class B title with records of 5-1/2 - 1-1/2. Girtz took third place with a 4-3 record and 41.43%. Brad Heth of Blaine captured the Class A title with a 6-1 record and 46.41% ringers. Second place went to Janet Roubinek of Pine City, as she had a 5-2 mark. Jerry Werk of Herman in Western Minnesota took third place at 4-3.

Becker Twp. owns the building that the American Legion is occupying on the south end and the horseshoe courts are on the north side. A new sidewalk was installed last summer and the leaky roof was repaired, among other things. Two nice flag murals have been painted inside the building on the north wall — the American Flag on the left and the POW-MIA flag on the right. It is looking very nice inside the building.
