Becker girl takes on the world

Ashley Matvick, a freshman at the University of Minnesota, has recently won a world championship.

She has been on quite the dancing craze having first won nationals back in January. Chasing her success to the world stage, her team had been awarded gold in Pom dancing, a style of dancing using pompoms as a major part of the choreography. If that wasn’t impressive enough, they also won silver in jazz, the rhythmic quick stepping novelty many have grown to love. The gold was given to Japan in Jazz and silver for pom.

The University of Minnesota isn’t a slouch when it comes to dancing, reigning 23 time national champions since 2003. In that time, they have garnered four gold medals after competing in the International Cheer Union World Championship-with the last time being in 2014. They’re a D1A dance team, which is the highest division of competitive dancers in the National Dance Alliance. The team consists of 25 student-athletes and coach Amanda Gaines.

Ashley has worked hard, having started dancing since she was two years old. She is constantly practicing, even before she was recruited to be on the university of Minnesota’s dance team, she had been on the Becker dance team for six years. Then she was recruited by team Minnesota. Now, she is coaching at The Vibe, a dancing school she was involved with, previously.
