Track Teams Finish Season At Thief River Falls, Schmidt Rolls On

The boys and girls track teams finished their Section 8AA playoffs with relays, shot put, triple jump, high jump, pole vault and discus at Thief River Falls last Saturday.

Boys Track & Field
“While it was not the perfect day for a track meet we were able to make it through without any rain delays,” said Head Coach Paul Schmidt.
Becker had no individuals advance to state with the Bulldog 4x200 relay team  the only group to score team points.

Jaylin Hildebrant, Matt Davalos, Andrew Davalos and Kevin Andres finished second in their heat and eighth overall to score Becker's lone  point.  They ran their best time of the year, which Schmidt hopes will springboard them into next year in that event.

The boys held their award banquet earlier this week where the following individuals were given awards based on their performances this year.

Letter winners this year were seniors Austin Soare, Kreston Gammon, Mason Olson and Luke Schmitz who were also awarded captain pins for their leadership.   Olson, Pancoast, Gabe Dertinger, Hildebrant, Luke Lahr, Bhavin Bhakta, Matt Davalos, Logan Gallus, Johnathan Novak, Andres, Andrew Davalos, Dylan Laudenbach, Brett Parson, Dillon Radunz and Adam Bauman also received letters this year.

Scholar athlete award was given to Lahr for a 3.954 GPA while Matt and Andrew Davalos were also awarded all conference academic awards.

Honorable mention all conference certificates were given to Andrew Davalos, Matt Davalos, Hildebrandt, Laudenbach and Gammon.

Top field event athlete was awarded to Gammon for his great year in shot and disc.

Rookie of the year went to Lahr.

Most dedicated athlete was Case.

Most improved athlete was Radunz and team MVP was awarded to Lahr, scoring the most team points for the Bulldogs.

Special thanks goes out to the Lions Club of Clear Lake and the Becker Youth Sports program for their donations for our new uniforms this year.

Girls Track & Field
The highlight of the girls’ day Saturday was Hannah Schmidt placing second in the pole vault, qualifying her for the state meet in a second event (along with the high jump).  Schmidt vaulted 9'7" to place second to Little Falls' Rachelle LaBlanc.

The girls left Becker at 3 a.m. for their trip to Thief River Falls the morning after graduation. Many were worried about what the weather might bring. There was a bit of rain and some drizzle and clouds, but the teams were very fortunate compared to the meet held in Zimmerman that same day.  (They had a down pour and lightning to deal with).

Three of Becker’s relays had season best times in this meet.  The 4x200 relay had Haley Olsen passing to Michaela Manifold with a late pass but legal.  Michaela passed to Maesyn Thiesen who had a very nice hand off to Shannon Sydow.  All the girls ran nice legs for a time of 1:53.71 which was two seconds faster than the previous season best.

The 4x100 relay also ran well with Lexi Michels, Morgan Youngdahl, Haley Olsen and Shannon Sydow passing the baton well for a time of 53.73 as a season best.

In the 4x400 relay, Aubree Lahr, Madi Kealy, Manifold and Maesyn Thiesen ran a season best time of 4:24.87

Along with Schmidt’s second place finish in pole vault,  the individual events saw Becker running in the 1600 meter run.  Madi Kealy ran a 5:56.72 for 30th,  Jada Rositas got a PR in 6:03.39 (33rd) and Tate Spinner got her PR of 6:12.87 for 36th place.

In the shot put, Marissa Moeller placed 26th with 30'10". Triple jump had Montanna Edling jumping 30'11.75 for 24th and Haley Hubbard 30'3 for 29th.

The state meet is being held at Hamline University this weekend with Schmidt high jumping Friday morning. Her dad, boys track coach Paul Schmidt, is there to coach her and will do so Saturday morning when she competes in the pole vault. Dustin Weege, who normally coaches Hannah in the pole vault will partner with Paul  to get the best from Hannah.

Results of Schmidt’s state experience will appear in next week’s Citizen along with the girls end-of-the-year banquet awards.
