Thunder ends Hornets season

The Big Lake football team had their season ended with a 23-8 loss last week against Zimmerman. The team was unable to contain the Thunder rushing attack as Zimmerman ran for over 400 yards on the ground.

After scoring a combined 78 points less than a week earlier, the two teams combined for zero in the first half last Tuesday. Both defenses were able to make some timely plays to keep the opposing offense out of the endzone.

The scoring started in the second half when the Thunder plunged in from a yard out to take an 8-0 lead. After the Hornets were unable to match, Zimmerman scored again, this time from 70-yards out. That score and successful two-point try gave them a 16-0 lead.

This time Big Lake had an answer, as Carson Gellerman broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run. He also ran in the point after attempt to cut the lead to 16-8.

Zimmerman scored once more in the fourth quarter to make it a two-score game, which was too much for the Hornets to overcome. The last score and extra point made the final score 23-8.

Gellerman finished the day 11/27 passing for 128 yards, while also serving as the team’s leading rusher with 108 yards on the ground. Carter Stromberg had 42 yards on 11 carries. Caleb Martin was the leading receiver with 46 yards on three catches. Jose Acuna had 35 receiving yards, Owen Wilczek 17, Garrett Biesiada 16, and Jack Midas 10.

Reid Josewski was the team’s leading tackler with 15 total tackles. He was followed closely by Braedyn Wemple with 13 of his own and a forced fumble. Montell Hester added nine total tackles and a forced fumble. Trevor Couch had eight total tackles.

The Hornets finished the season 2-7.
