The Becker boys tennis team competed last Thursday at home against Alexandria and Monticello. The Bulldogs lost to Alexandria but beat Monticello.
Alexandria 4, Becker 3
The Cardinals returned all of their players from last season and that veteran leadership showed as they won three big tiebreakers to seal the 4-3 victory over Becker.
Jacob Lukkarila (won 6-3, 6-0) and Brady Gruenhagen (won 6-2, 6-4) continued to lead well at #1 and #2 singles. Aidan Persons and Ryan Bengtson (won 6-3, 6-3) looked really sharp at #1 doubles.
Becker 6, Monticello 1
In round two, Becker bounced back and played really well — especially in singles. Lukkarila won his match 6-0, 6-0. Gruenhagen won 6-1, 6-2. Caden Elliot won 6-2, 6-4 and Zach Bengtson won 6-1, 7-6 (7-0).
Becker’s #1 doubles team (Persons and Ryan Bengtson) continued to lead well (won 6-0, 6-3) and #2 doubles (Luke Bordson and Eli Scheideman) played a great match and won 6-1, 6-3.
“Monticello is in our sub-section for playoffs - so this was a great win for our team,” said Becker Head Coach Hokan Bengtson.
Becker 7, Cathedral 0
Tuesday, Becker played St. Cloud Cathedral and won at every level.
Lukkarila won 6-3, 6-0 at #1 singles. Gruenhagen won 6-2, 6-1 at #2 singles. Bordson won 6-2, 6-4 at #3 singles and Zach Bengtson won his match, 0-6, 7-5, 10-6.
Persons and Ryan Bengtson won 6-0, 6-2 in #1 doubles. Elliot and Scheideman won 6-0, 6-0 at #2 doubles and Isaac Boyer and Bruce Kramer won 6-0, 6-0 at #3 doubles.
“It was a good showing by our guys tonight versus Cathedral,” said Hokan. “I was impressed with their ability to focus on the things they could control.”
Becker is 4-2 overall, 1-0 in the conference.
