Tennis Team Improves To 11 1

The Becker boys tennis team went 1-1 this past week, improving to 11-1 on the year.

Becker 7, Aitkin 0

The Bulldogs rebounded from their first match loss of the year to Foley by whooping the Aitkin Gobblers in straight sets Thursday night.

The matches were played in cold, blustery weather but that didn’t deter Hokan Bengtson’s team from gaining their 11th win of the year.

Dawson Brown and Jackson Lefebvre won their matches and stayed undefeated at 12-0.

“Austin (Hill) played what I thought was his best match of the season,” said Bengtson.  “Our doubles teams are coming along, we had a great match at #1 doubles.  Erik (Tungland) and C.J. (Howard) really played well to beat a good #1 team from Aitkin.”

Scores:
#1 singles: Brown (BB) win over Bryce Haugly (AG), 6-2, 6-0; #2 singles: Josiah Borst (BB) win over Josh Carlberg (AG), 6-1, 6-1; #3 singles: Austin Hill (BB) win over Jen Noon (AG), 6-1, 6-0; #4 singles: Lefebvre (BB) win over Jagger Anderson (AG), 6-0, 6-0.

Foley 5, Becker 2

The boys hosted Foley indoors Monday and lost their first match of the year. Foley is ranked #5 in Class A and they took down the Bulldogs by a score of 5-2.

“It (the match) took three hours to decide the winner, and we ended up with big wins by Dawson Brown at #1 singles and Jackson Lefebvre at #4 singles,” said Head Coach Hokan Bengtson.

Becker lost three set matches at #1 and #2 doubles, along with a really close match at #2 singles.  Brown beat Foley’s #1 singles player who is ranked in the top 10 in class A.

In other tennis news, one of Becker’s top stars has decided to not play high school tennis this year.

Jason Dilly, who a few weeks back had injured his arm and lost his #1 singles spot, has informed Coach Bengtson he wants to take a different route to prepare himself for college tennis, which he plans to play in the fall.

Dilly will continue to train in the cities in order to get ready for that next level of tennis.

Dilly’s injury, first reported to be a stress fracture, has been upgraded to a stress reaction and he is improving well.

The tennis team played Friday at Minneapolis Southwest and that match’s results will appear in next week’s Citizen. Monday they head to Pine City, then enjoy four straight matches at home to close out the season.
