Spring Teams Begin Practicing This Week

As the snow continues to melt and temperatures start rising, the spring high school sports teams began stirring in the gyms, weight rooms and fieldhouses to get ready for their upcoming seasons next month.

The baseball and softball teams took turns in the gym and fieldhouse, playing catch, making throws and hitting balls in the cages. Thier first games are just around the corner — as long as the field drains and the frost lifts soon. Tyler Niedfeldt and Jason Baune return as head coaches.

The boys and girls golf teams are busy fine-tuning their swings in the wrestling room. Under the tutelage of their coaches, they are smacking balls into a large fishing net and taking tips on gripping and posturing for putting. Dan Olson and Anna Babler return as head coaches.

The boys and girls lacrosse teams are everywhere — utilizing the high school and middle school gyms, the fieldhouse and are even using the weight room when it is less busy after school. Anicca and Mike Lundeen have taken over for Hugh Hovde as the girls coach while Paul VanVoorhis remains the boys coach.

Boys tennis hopes to hit the outdoor courts soon, but in the meantime they will continue to seek time on the floor of the fieldhouse. Hokan Bengtson returns as their head coach.

Track & Field is off and running as they held their first indoor scrimmage of the year Thursday against Big Lake, Zimmerman and Rocori. Coaches Trish Reimer-Kealy and Paul Schmidt return to coach the mighty athletes.

Soon the sun will be shining, temps will be in the 60’s and 70’s and the sounds of bats smacking balls, balls hitting nets and golf clubs swooshing will be heard all around Becker all over again.
