Spring Sports Teams (Again) Scrambling To Get Practices In

With many of the Becker High School spring sports teams a week or so away from starting their seasons, the Becker Fieldhouse, mezzanine, gymnasium, wrestling and gymnastics rooms are jam-packed with youths trying to get physically ready to play their sports.

It appears for the second year in a row, Mother Nature wants to keep winter very much alive in Minnesota.

The boys and girls track teams held a time trial in the fieldhouse and invited several schools to participate on a dry track compared to the mounds of snow still stacked several feet high on the roads, parking lots and playing fields.

With Becker’s new outdoor track ready to go, the teams won’t get the chance to put it to use until May 20 when they host Little Falls and Zimmerman at the end of the season. Both track teams begin their seasons  Saturday (March 29) at Foley (weather permitting).

The girls golf team practiced indoors in the wrestling room Thursday afternoon under the tutelage of Steve Whitaker. They got one-on-one instruction and used the driving mats and nets to simulate the golfing experience they soon hope to enjoy outdoors. The boys team will also be utilizing the wrestling room until the weather clears and they can hit Pebble Creek for practice.

The girls golf team is scheduled to start the season Apr. 2 at Monticello and the boys Apr. 7 at Pebble Creek (weather permitting).

Same goes for the softball team as Head Coach Jason Baune had the girls occupy the main gymnasium and the upper concourse to get in throwing and hitting drills. Baune said the snow cover is, of course, a major problem but his biggest worry tends to be the low-lying frost which will most likely cause havoc on the infield dirt when the fields finally get cleared of snow.

The girls are scheduled to start their season Apr. 4 at Little Falls (weather permitting).

The girls and boys lacrosse teams have been gearing up for their seasons for several weeks now, sometimes using the middle school gym and whatever available space is available to practice and get in good physical shape for the season. The girls are scheduled to start April 5 at Centennial, but that game may have to be rescheduled because of weather.

The boys lacrosse team starts their season April 7 at home against St. Louis Park  - again, weather permitting.

The baseball team has been working out for their season for several weeks now and Head Coach Chuck Stanger is anxious to get his kids outside and play on the fields instead of the gymnasium or mezzanine.

His team is scheduled to start the regular season Apr. 4 at home against Princeton (weather permitting).

The Citizen will be featuring their annual spring sports special section the weekend of April 5 showcasing team photos, interviews and exciting news about the Becker Bulldog teams.
