Santiago Horseshoe Club’s season ends

The Santiago Horseshoe Club completed its 2020 season on Sunday afternoon.

The club had its potluck picnic lunch under shelter at the Santiago sports grounds on Sunday. It looked like their double-elimination tourney would be washed out. The rain quit at 1p.m. and the members were able to finish the tourney under sunny skies.

Rick Alickson and Jim Aleckson, who finished eighth in the 12 week league season, won five straight to win the tourney with a six to one record. They defeated Jerry and Marty
Rajkowski of Foley the last two games to win. The Rajkowskis finished second at four to two. Third went to the young team of Logan Anderson and C.J. Schinted.

The final payoff spot went to Ron Ruch and Chuck Wold, who finished fourth.

The league season found two teams tied as co-champs. Russ Girtz of Monticello and Don Claseman of St. Cloud finished 23 to 13, as did Al Gunderson of Princeton and Gary Spoden of Foley. Ron Ruch and Chuck Wold were third at 21 to 15, and the Rajowskis were fourth at 20 to 16.

All the big tournaments were cancelled in Minnesota this year because of COVID-19. This included the state singles, doubles, and most of the open tournies around the state. The Santiago Horseshoe Club was fortunate to get in its July 18th open (won by Jeff Washburn of Shoreview) and its complete season.
