River Cats, Lakers Start Seasons

It’s time for some baseball again, and Clearwater and Clear Lake residents have two teams to go out and cheer for, the Clearwater River Cats and the Clear Lake Lakers.

Clearwater River Cats

The Clearwater River Cats had four games, achieving two wins and seeing two losses.

The team defeated their region foe, the Albertville Villains 10 to 0, backed by an awesome pitching performance by Ty Carper, who threw six innings, giving up two hits and one walk, and recording 15 strikeouts; this included the first 11 batters of the game.

The River Cats were led by Carper on the offense as well, where he went 2 for 5 for two RBIs. Cole Gueningsman went 2 for 4 for two RBIs, earning a walk and scoring a run.

Jordan Picka went 2 for 4 with a walk, and Jack Grell went 2 for 4 with a walk and scoring a run. Jacob Carper went 1 for 1 with a walk and scoring a run, Justin Hauge went 1 for 4, and Nick Proshek went 1 for 2 with two walks and a pair of runs.

The team was outplayed by the Luxemburg Brewers in their game June 17, losing 17 to 2. Pitcher Jack Grell started on the mound where he threw three innings, giving up eight hits, issuing four walks and eight runs, and recording two strikeouts.

Relief pitcher Andy Nefs threw three innings, giving up seven hits and five runs, and issuing one walk. Callen Henkemeyer threw the remaining inning, giving up two hits, four runs, one walk, and recording one strikeout.

They were led by Adam Smith on the offense, who went 1 for 4 with a home run for two RBIs; Nick Proshek went 2 for 4. Grell scored a run and earned a walk, while Cole Gueningsman, Justin Hauge, Callen Henkemeyer, Jordan Picka, and Andrew Nefs all earned walks.

The River Cats were defeated by their regional foe the Foley Lumberjacks, with starting pitcher Jake Carper throwing six innings, where he gave up six hits, six runs, and four walks, and recorded four strikeouts.

Relied pitcher Adam Smith threw one inning, where he issued a walk, and Cody Thiery threw four innings, giving up four hits, four runs, and one walk, and recorded one strikeout. Nick Proshek threw one inning, retiring the three batters he faced.

Offense was led by Jordan Picka, who went 1 for 4 with a home run, and Tyler Carper, who went 2 for 4 with a double. Justin Hauge went 1 for 3 and was hit by a pitch, Zach Schmidt and Callen Henkemeyer both went 1 for 3.

In a close game, the River Cats came from behind to beat the St. Joseph Joes by 1 point, winning 15 to 14; a home run in the top of the 10th by Jordan Picka was the game decider. The team put up five runs in the seventh inning and seven runs in the eighth.

Ty Carper started on the mound, where he threw two innings, giving up six hits, five runs, one walk, and recording five strikeouts. Andy Nefs threw two innings, giving up three hits, seven runs, two walks, and recording two strikeouts.

Andy Johnson threw 1 2/3 innings, where he issued four walks and recorded two strikeouts. Nick Proshek threw 2 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and two runs, issued four walks, and recorded two strikeouts. Cory Schmidt threw two innings in relief to earn the win, recording four strikeouts.

Offense was led by Jordan Picka, who went 1 for 4 with a home run, was hit by a pitch, stole one base, scored two runs and earned one walk. Callan Hinkemeyer went 3 for 7 with a double for two RBIs and scored two runs.

Nick Proshek went 1 for 4 for two RBIs and earning a pair of walks, and Zach Schmidt went 3 for 4 for two RBIs and scoring a run. Cory Schmidt went 1 for 5 for an RBI, earning two walks and scoring two runs.

Adam Smith went 1 for 2 with a sacrifice fly for an RBI, earning one walk and scoring two runs. Ty Carper went 1 for 6 for an RBI, earning a walk and scoring two runs. Jack Grell went 1 for 2 with an RBI, earning three walks and scoring two runs.

Cole Gueningsman earned five walks and scored two runs, Justin Hauge earned a pair of walks, and Jake Carper earned one walk.

Clear Lake Lakers

Along with their game against the Becker Bandits last week (see Bandits win opener, 13-4), the Clear Lake Lakers played five innings against their Sauk Valley League rivals the Albertville Villains, losing 11 to 1.
