Quill Sparkles For St. Ben’s

Emily Quill continued her dominance on the diving board Saturday afternoon as she swept the one- and three-meter competitions to lead the College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team in a MIAC dual at St. Kate’s.

CSB swept the top three spots on both boards with Quill in the lead for the team as the Bennies fell 198-98 to the Wildcats – who are currently ranked 14th in Division III. Quill’s wins were the only to finishes for Saint Benedict, which notched seven runner-up finishes.

Quill – who is undefeated on the one-meter board this season and has two wins and two second-place finishes on the three-meter board. She won the one-meter competition with a score of 237.95. Teammates Artie Pomerenke (222.80) and Mia Sabin (205.75) took second and third, respectively. On the three-meter board, Quill scored a 225.10 for the win, and Sabin moved into eighth in CSB history with a score of 193.35 – a 14-point personal best. Pomerenke took third with a 170.75.

Mikayla Von Wahlde took second in both the 100 and 200 backstroke races. She finished the 100 backstroke in 1:01.00 and the 200 in a season-best time of 2:11.18. Madison Slavik took third in the 100 back in 1:03.44. First year Jessica Milstroh also recorded two runner-up finishes, taking second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.02 and the 50 free in 25.87 seconds. Molly Johanson took third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.37.

Ana Birklid took second in the 200 free in 2:02.18 and third in the 200 IM in 2:19.11. Morgan Murphy finished third in the 1,650 free (20:16.79), Mary Ridgeway took third in the 200 fly (2:32.64), Jacque Newhouse finished third in the 500 freestyle (5:37.44 and Brenna Sharp took third in the 100 fly in 1:06.74.

Von Wahlde, Milstroh, Newhouse and Birklid teamed up to finish third in the 400 medley relay in 4:14.73, and Thea Oman, Von Wahlde, Milstroh and Birklid finished third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:52.06.

Saturday’s dual marked the final competition of 2019 for the CSB swim and dive team. The team is back in action in 2020 when it heads south for its annual training trip in Florida. CSB hosts St. Olaf in a MIAC dual on Friday, Jan. 17, at the Palaestra Pool on the SJU campus.
