Tim Brigner, who hails from Pierz, came up with his best effort of the day, a 60% ringer game in the seventh game over Russ Girtz of Big Lake to win the Becker Pot-O-Gold Horseshoe Tournament, 32-25.
The win allowed Brigner to finish 6-1 and avoid a three-way tie with second place finisher, Gary Boots of Barrett, who tied third place winner, Tom Prokap of White Bear Lake at 5-2. Boots won second place on the tiebreaker in the Class A, Gold Coins division last Saturday in the St. Patrick Tournament in Becker.
Jerald Hagen of Hankinson, ND captured the Class B, Leprechauns division. Hagen was tied with Myron Vanderweyst of Rice at 5-2 but took first place on the tiebreaker. Barry Schilling of Barnsville took the third money spot, tying Sarah Nelson of Cambridge at 4-1/2, 2-1/2. Hagen also won the tiebreaker in the closely-contested division.
Trevor Teich of (Sometown), MN also tied for first place with Carolyn Brigner of Pierz (Tim’s wife) at 5-2 with Trevor winning the tiebreaker. Mike Hoffman of Rural Becker won third place over two other pitchers in the Class C Gold Coins division to take the third spot.
The seventh and last horseshoe classic of the winter season will be held around the middle of April at the Becker courts.
Last Wednesday Eve at 10 p.m., a crew from Channel 4 News came out to the Becker horseshoe courts and put together a nice spot showing off the Becker horseshoe courts and pitchers. State President Russ Girtz was interviewed for the special.
