The Pebble Creek eight-man, Senior Match Play team won the B Division State Championship by beating Monticello at Greenhaven last Thursday.
The MPGA sponsors a senior eight-man match play competition for 32 MPGA member clubs. The competition includes an “A” and a “B” division with Pebble Creek’s team playing in the “B” division.
The other teams competing for the state title in Pebble Creek’s Hogan B division included players from the Links at Northfork, Majestic Oaks and Rum River Hills. Each club played a home-and-away match and the top two teams advanced to the quarter finals (Pebble Creek and the Links at Northfork).
Pebble Creek had 21 players on their team playing at various times during the season and were captained by Gary Obele. The players include Al Siemers, Barry Ashmore, Bill Riddering, Bill Timmer, Dan Brannan, Dwight Lundeen, Greg Mattson, Jim Anderson, John Dinsmore, Ken Batts, Mark Dunderi, Mike Cleland, Mike McCann, Randy Luth, Randy Siemers, Ray Sauer, Steve Engelby, Steve Whittaker, Ted Crowe and Warren Johnson.
In the quarter finals, Pebble Creek was matched against Manitou Ridge Aug. 29 in a home-and-home match. Pebble Creek won (8-to-4 and 10.5-to-1.5) to move on to the semi-finals against Baker National at Riverwood Country Club Sept. 7.
Pebble Creek beat Baker National (8-to-4) to advance to the finals against Monticello Sept. 21 at Greenhaven. Obele’s team defeated Monticello 11.5-to-.5 points to capture the title.
The players competing against Monticello were (Team one): Lundeen and Mattson; (Team two): Cleland and Riddering; (Team three): Randy Siemers and Sauer; (team four): Whittaker and Engelby.
This is the first time the Senior Eight-Man Match Play team from Pebble Creek has won the MPGA Championship.
The format is a two-person team playing for three points. The points are determined by the winner of the front nine, back nine and total.
For the league, a player must be at least 55-years of age as of the date of the competition.
