More than 125 runners compete in Spud Fest 5k

The weather wasn’t ideal for a distance run - warm, sunny and humid, but it didn’t stop more than 125 runners from finishing the Big Lake Spud Fest 5k run Saturday morning.

Officially, 132 finished the race that began on Lakeside Drive and continued around Big Lake and Lake Mitchell and ended in Lakeside Park. The group of athletes was a mix of established distance runners and just people of all ages competing against themselves trying to do their best.

In the end, it was former Hornet distance runner Kade Layton who separated himself from the group and crossed the finish line first in 19:38.2. He also won the race last year in 19:32.7.

For the second straight year it was Sameer Gupta taking second in 21:03, just over a minute faster than his time last year.

Monticello distance standout Isabel Mahoney, who won the State AA 3200 meters this year, was third overall in 21:37.4.
