Leuer leads Hornet track and field team

Jack Leuer set a new Big Lake school record and won the 1600 meters at the 5AA True Team Section Meet at Cold Spring May 9.

Leuer, a sophomore, finished in 4:20.02, a few steps ahead of Becker’s Tyson Ricker to get the title. Big Lake’s previous school record of 4:21.69 was set by Nate Souther in 2015.

Leuer was a double winner at the meet. He also edged Ricker to take the title in the 800 meters in 1:57.56.

Owen Layton had Big Lake’s other top finish. The junior won the 3200 meters in 9:27.96.

Carson Kunz finished second in the high jump, clearing 5’10”.

Kyle Ginther took third in the long jump at 19’9.5”. He was fifth in the triple jump at 38’11.75”.

Kade Layton finished fourth in the 1600 in 4:31.68.

Spencer Vold was fourth in the pole vault at 12’6”. He finished fifth in the 400 meters in 53.56.

Tanon Jacobsen was fifth in the 3200 meters in 10:23.25.

Wuoson Nehwah cleared 5’6 in the high jump to take sixth.

CJ Mikely took seventh in the 100 (11.64) and 200 (23.2).

Riley Thompson was seventh in the discus with a throw of 119’6”.

Big Lake’s 4x200 relay team of Nehwah, Ginther, Ben Sellner and Mikely finished second in 1:34.51, less than a second behind Spectrum.

As a team the Hornets finished second behind ROCORI.

For the girls, there weren’t lots of higher places, but many of the athletes set personal bests.

Ava Eastman set a personal best and season’s best in the 200 meters in 28.42 seconds. In the same race Sydney Roy rana personal best 29.4.

Emilee Doperalski set a personal best of 6:22.22 in the 3200 meters.

Eight-grader Leah Uphoff ran a personal best 18.14 in the 100 meter hurdles and took eighth.

Tayla Gassman won all four wheelchair events and set a personal best of 63.1 in the 200 meters.

Brynn Scheer set a personal best of 75.18 in the 400 meters.

Joelle Lentz set a person best of 76’6” in the discus.

Big Lake’s 4x100 team of Ellyanna Ratliff, Emily Shoop, Addison Holmen and Arrianna Wagner had a personal best time of 57.69.

The 4x200 team of Holmen, Alivia Voss, Grace McCrone and Eastman also set a personal best time of 1:57.24.

The conference championship meet was held Wednesday, results next week.

The Hornets compete in the section meet at Monticello Wednesday at 3 p.m., with finals Friday at 9:30 a.m.
