Legion teams rekindle Hwy. 10 rivalry

While Covid-19 has wiped out a huge portion of the local sports scene in the past four months, it didn’t interrupt the long standing rivalry between Highway 10 neighbors Becker and Big Lake as the community Legion baseball teams met Tuesday evening in Hornet country.

Big Lake Manager Robert Hoekstra said his team rode a “dominating” performance from Zeus Schlegel en route to a 9-4 victory over Becker.

Schlegel belted a pair of home runs, including a three run blast in the first inning as Big Lake raced to a 5-0 lead after the first and never looked back.

Schlegel was also a force on the mound, as he started the game and went four innings, scattering just three hits, walking no one and he struck out eight Becker hitters.

In addition to Schlegel’s stellar performance, Hoekstra credited overall team balance to the rout.

“Everyone made positive contributions in tonight’s victory,” said the manager, who also singled out catcher Will Boeckman’s two hits and two RBI.

In the hits department, the teams were nearly even, as Big Lake had nine hits and Becker scratched out eight.  Dalton Fouquette led the Becker attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
