Legion team struggles with four losses

The Big Lake American Legion team went 0-4 two weeks ago, losing to Monticello, St. Michael, Maple Plain and Lakeville South.

STMA 8, Big Lake 1

Big Lake managed just three hits off of Reid Barnard of STMA, who pitched five innings, recording six strikeouts and four walks in an evening away game, July 7.

Big Lake was led by Collin Skaug, who had two of the three hits as well as one walk. Kaden Haselius had the other hit for Big Lake and Dylan Robeck had the RBI

STMA scored two in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fith to win by seven, They ended up with eight hits.

Monticello 11, Big Lake 0

The Hornets were shut out by Monticello, July 8 at home, managing just two hits in the affair.

The Magic scored twice in the first, four times in the second, once in the third, fourth and fifth innings and topped it off with two in the sixth. They had 15 hits in the contest.

Skaug and Robeck were the tow Big Lakers with hits as Monticello’s Brock Witola recorded 11 strikeouts in five innings.

Keenan Hjermstad was Big Lake’s ptcher and he went five inninggs giving up 14 hits, 11 runs while striking out one and giving up one BOB.

Maple Plain 9, Big Lake 5

In the morning of July 10, the Hornets took on Maple Plain in the opening game of a doubleheader and lost by four.

The dagger came in the third inning when Maple Plain tallied seven runs. They finished the game with 10 hits but Big Lake’s five errors in the contest proved fatal.

Haselius had two RBIs and Samson Schlegel went 2-for-3 with one run scored for Big Lake. Schlegel was alos the starting pitcher and he gave up 10 hits, nine runs and had four strikeouts and four walks.

Maple Plain’s Josh Heller went all seven innings, giving up eight hits, five runs and two walks while striking out five.

Lakeville South 9, Big Lake 8

The Hornets appeared to have a win in their backpocket in the second game of the double-header, heading into the final inning with a 7-0 lead. However, Lakeville South rallied to tie the game in the last half of the inning. Big Lake garnered hope again when they scored one in the top of the eight to go up 8-7. However, Lakeville South capped off the win with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to crush the Hornets.

Stern had a big game, going  2-for-4 with three RBIs and scoring once. Nolan Reiter also had a big day, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a base on balls.

Haselius got the start on the mound and was sailing along until the seventh inning when the wheels came off. He was able to record one out before surrendering four runs and Jeff rey Wanhala came on in relief. He struggled too, as Lakeville South scored three times to square the game. Reiter gave up the final two runs when he hit the first two batters with pitches, then walked a man before giving up a single to take the loss.
