Legion team squashed by Chisago Lakes in doubleheader

The Big Lake American Legion baseball team kicked off their summer season with a doubleheader against Chisago Lakes June 15.

They lost both games to start the season 0-2.

First Game

Chisago Lakes scored runs in every inning but one to easily dispose of the Hornets, 9-2.

Big Lake got a single and a walk in the first, but failed to tally a run. Chisago Lakes got three singles in the bottom of the first to score one run, then scored their second run on an error by Big Lake’s rightfielder.

Big Lake had another opportunity to score in the second when Kaden Haselius reached first on an error and Carson Brown walked to put runners at first and second with nobody out. The next two batters went down by strikeout and Jaxyn Tschritter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, Collin Skaug popped out to right to thwart the rally.

Chisago Lakes failed to score in the bottom half of inning number two and Big Lake responded with two runs to even the game at 2-2 when Haselius doubled in Isaiah Terlinden with the first run and Haselius scored on an error moments later.

That was it for scoring for Big Lake as Chisago Lakes would add three runs in the bottom of the inning, then one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to capture the victory.

Haselius was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Hjermstad and Dylan Robeck each had two hits in the game. Big Lake finished with just six hits.

Hjermstad toed the rubber for 5-2/3’s innings, giving up 12 hits and nine runs while striking out four and issuing two walks.

Chisago Lake’s Nathan Zingerman went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Ryan Sanvik was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. August Brown went 5 innings on the mound, giving up all six hits and two runs but had seven strikeouts and three walks.

Second Game

In game two, Chisago Lakes jumped out to a three run lead in the first, then tacked on another six before Big Lake responded in the later innings. The final score was 14-3.

Skaug had three hits in four ABs and scored one of the Big Lake runs. Terlinden was 1-for 3 with two RBIs.

Samson Schlegel was Big Lake’s starter and he finished three innings, giving up six hits and nine runs while striking out five and surrendering eight walks.

The Brown brothers (August and Adam) stung the Hornets going 4-for-8 (collectively) and driving in seven runs. They each scored twice and August belted a home run to right field in the sixth to finish the scoring for Chisago Lakes.

Zingerman pitched all six innings giving up eight hits, three runs and one walk while striking out four.
