Lady Bulldogs Improve To 16 2 With Four More Wins

The Becker girls softball team played four games this past week, winning all four and improving to 16-2.

Last Friday afternoon was Parent's night and things got off to a great start when Becker scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a Kadee Vesledahl single.  
 
The Bulldogs added another run in the second when Allison Cieslak doubled and scored on a Payton Williams single.  
 
Another run came on an Erika Schwartz home run in the bottom of the third to push the score 4-0.  
 
Becker put the game out of reach with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.  
 
Rocori got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 7-2, but the Bulldogs responded with  five runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the 12-2 win.   Cieslak and Williams each had three hits on the night.  Williams also drove in three runs and Vesledahl drove in four.  
 
Brianna Corey picked up the win on the mound.  She went all five innings and allowed five hits while walking two and striking out five.
 
Becker 10, Buffalo 2
 
Last Saturday, Becker traveled to Buffalo to take on a very good Bison team and came away with a relatively easy eight-run win. Once again Becker struck first with three runs in the top of the first with  Williams, Cassie Althoff and Marikate Wegeleben each singling in the inning. After a scoreless second, the Bulldogs pushed the lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the third.  Samantha Lorette drove in two runs with a single in the inning.
 
After Buffalo scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, Becker answered with two in the top of the fifth to make it 8-2.  Two more runs were tacked on in the sixth to make the final 10-2.  
 
Wegeleben, Williams, and Lorette had multiple hits in the game.  Corey picked up another win, going all seven innings.  She allowed four hits, walked a batter and struck out one.
 
Becker 8, Cathedral 0
 
Tuesday, the girls hosted St. Cloud Cathedral for a doubleheader with an opportunity to clinch a second consecutive conference championship against the second place Crusaders.  
 
In game one, the home team struck early with four runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second to take a 7-0 lead. Samantha Lorette drove in two runs in the first with a single. Althoff, Wegeleben, and Erika Schwartz each had RBI hits in the second inning.  
 
Becker added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double by Lorette to account for the final score of 8-0.  
 
Williams, Schwartz and Lorette each had two hits in the game.  
 
Brianna Corey picked up the win as pitcher going five innings and allowing three hits while striking out three.  
 
Vesledahl made her 2014 debut on the mound as she recovers from shoulder surgery in the fall. She pitched the sixth inning and allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two.  Maddy Mohrman completed the shutout with a scoreless seventh inning.
 
Becker 8, Cathedral 2
 
In game 2, the Bulldogs scored a run in the first on an RBI single by Althoff. They added another run in the second on an Alexa Hanowski RBI single.  
 
Becker added to the lead with three runs in the fourth with  Samantha Lorette tripling in a run and scoring on an RBI single by her sister, Lindsey.  
 
The Crusaders got on the board with a run in the fifth to make the score 5-1. Two more runs were tallied by Becker in the sixth with  Williams and Wegeleben each having RBI singles in the inning. Cathedral scored their second run in the bottom of the inning, but Becker answered with their final score of the game on another Hanowski single.  
 
Corey picked up another win with four shutout innings. Mohrman finished the game on the mound, going three innings and striking out three while allowing three hits and a walk.
 
With the four wins, Becker moved to 16-2 on the season and 12-0 in the conference.  
 
Becker was looking to finish a second undefeated conference season Friday night when they host Mora on Senior Night (full report on game in next week’s Citizen).
 
The Bulldogs will begin their playoffs Wednesday afternoon and while final seeding is yet to be determined, it is likely that Becker will be at home at 6 p.m.
