The Becker girls softball team improved to 8-3 on the year and are currently ranked #4 in Class 3A after winning four games and losing two this week.
Becker 7, Elk River 5
Last Friday night, the Bulldogs traveled to Elk River to take on the Elks in the Star Tribune game of the week.
Becker scored twice in the top of the first , three more in the second and topped off the game with one in the fifth and one in the seventh to pull out the win.
Brianna Corey had a huge night, going 5-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. She also got the win on the mound, going all seven innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits and struck out two. Ellie Schwartz went 2-for-4 with two doubles and scored two runs.
Zumb.-Mazeppa 7, Becker 5
The Bulldogs traveled Saturday to play in the Zumbrota-Mazeppa tournament. Becker’s first game of the day was against the host and defending state champion Cougars.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first with a run in the first. The Cougars tied the game at 1-1 with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the second.
Becker regained the lead in the third, but the Cougars scored four runs on four hits and an error in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.
In the fifth, Becker tied the score at five, however, Zumbrota took advantage of two Bulldog errors to score twice in the bottom of the fifth and held on for the 7-5 win.
Wiehle had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk. Megan Hopped added two base hits.
Weise took the tough loss despite only allowing two earned runs over five innings. Corey pitched a scoreless sixth.
Becker 9, Moose Lake/WR 2
In the second game of the day, the Bulldogs beat the Rebels by scoring three runs in the first, then adding three more runs in the third.
The Rebels got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, but Becker answered with two runs of their own in the fifth. The Rebels added one more run in the fifth on back-to-back base hits, but the Bulldogs prevailed, 9-2.
Hoppe was 3-for-4 and Schwartz and Corey each had two hits. Corey went the first three innings and Catrina Holm got her first varsity action on the mound by pitching the final four innings.
Norwood-YA 16, Becker 8
In Becker’s final game of the tournament, they took on the eventual champions and the game was a slugfest.
After allowing a first inning run, the Bulldogs tied the game with a leadoff home run by Schwartz. They put together a few more hits and two sacrifice flies to jump to a 3-1 lead.
Norwood-Young America retaliated with one run, then followed that up with an explosion, scoring seven runs on seven hits and two Bulldog errors in the top of the third to jump to a 10-3 lead.
Becker responded with two runs to get it to 10-5, then added three more runs to bring the score within two.
The Raiders pushed six more runs across in the final three innings to win by eight.
Schwartz, Corey, and Weise all had multiple hits in the game. Corey took the loss, pitching the first 2-1/3 innings with Weise finishing out the final 4-2/3innings.
Becker 9, Buffalo 8
Monday, Becker returned home and took on the defending state runner-up in a back-and-forth affair that lasted almost 2.5 hours.
The Bison jumped on the board in the first with an unearned run, but Becker tied it up in the bottom of the inning when Schwartz blasted a solo home run to right field.
Buffalo came back with another unearned run in the second, but Becker added four runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-2.
The Bison scored four runs on three hits and three walks to take a 6-5 lead in the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Becker retook the lead on a massive two-run home run by Weise.
The Bison wasted no time tying the score, as Gopher recruit Emily Hanson hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Another Bison player scored on back-to-back doubles to take the lead at 8-7.
With the game on the line, Mittelstaedt delivered a huge two-out RBI single to send the game to extra innings.
The Bison went down quickly in the top of the eighth and Becker secured the win when Corey singled, moved to third on a Weise double and scored on a Wiehle RBI ground ball to take the win over the sixth-ranked team in AAAA.
Corey was 3-for-4 on the day. Schwartz, Weise, and Mittelstaedt each added two hits. Corey took the win on the mound.
Becker 11, Mora 1
Becker’s marathon week of six games in five days concluded in Mora Tuesday night.
The Mustangs jumped on top in the bottom of the first on a solo home run,, which turned out to be the Mora’s only run of the day.
Becker responded with four runs in the third, five more in the fourth and finished the game with two runs in the sixth.
Schwartz picked up four hits on the day, while Corey, Weise, Mittelstaedt, and Hoppe each added two.
Corey once again got the win, pitching the first five innings, while Emily Lamott saw her first varsity action on the mound in the final inning.

The Bulldogs play Tuesday at St. Cloud and Thursday at home against Zimmerman.
Saturday, the Bulldogs host their annual Becker Invitational and their first game is against Duluth Denfeld at 10 a.m. Other teams competing include the defending tournament champs from Superior, #3-ranked and undefeated Anoka, as well as strong local teams from STMA and Rocori.
