Hornets win 2 of 3 to open baseball season

The Big Lake baseball team got off to a good start last week, winning two of its first three games.

Big Lake 6, Chisago Lakes 2

Friday, Brendan Goedker pitched a strong game and got good run support in a 6-2 win over Chisago Lakes at home.

The Hornets scored three runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batter in the first inning and kept the lead throughout the game.

Chisago Lakes reached Goedker for two runs in the fourth to close the gap. Cooper Cusick came in to get the final out in the fourth and worked into the fifth before being relieved by Caleb Martin.

The Hornets scored two more runs in the home fourth, then added their final run in the sixth.

Big Lake had 10 hits and received five walks in the game, Martin had two hits, a walk and drove in three runs. Cusick and Goedker each had two hits, a walk and scored a run. Conner Lundquist singled twice and scored two runs. Austin Schleif singled and drove in a run.

On the mound, Goedker allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out four. Cusick and Martin each allowed a hit, a walk and struck out a batter.

Princeton 8, Big Lake 1

Big Lake suffered its first loss of the season Thursday, 8-1 at Princeton.

Jackson Laroche started on the mound and was tagged for two runs each in the first, third and fifth inning. Martin pitched the sixth and allowed two runs.

At the plate Big Lake managed just four hits, one each by Lundquist, Martin, Trent Throolin and Blayne Varner.

Cooper Cusick walked and scored the only run for the Hornets in the fourth.

Laroche took the loss. He allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks. He struck out 10.

Big Lake 7, North Branch 0

In the season opener last Tuesday, Owen Wilczek had a dominant pitching performance in Big Lake’s 7-0 win at North Branch.

The hard-throwing right hander allowed just one hit, walked three and struck out 15 in six innings.

The Hornets managed a run in the first inning to take the lead. Viking starter Lucas Goggin also pitched well and struck out 12 batters.

Big Lake broke the game open with six runs in the seventh inning, which was more than enough for Wilczek.

Laroche came in to pitch the seventh inning and retired the side in order.

At the plate, Goedker led the offense with three hits, including two doubles. He also scored a run. Cusick singled, walked and scored two runs. Lundquist walked three times and scored a run. Jason Skoglund singled and drove in a run. Laroche drove in two runs and scored one.

The Hornets are 2-1 on the season. They played Zimmerman and Monticello this past week, results next week.
