Hornets smash Buffalo, 20-5

The Big Lake softball team defeated the visiting Buffalo Bison 20-5 last Thursday in a game that lasted only four innings. Seven different Hornets had multiple hits, led by Sam Nohrenberg, who went 4-4 with a homerun and three RBI.

The Bison briefly held a lead after scoring twice in the top of the first, but Big Lake answered with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Kamrynn Tschritter and Alyssa Windorski each had two RBI in the first inning. Tschritter scored two on a single and two batters later Windorski tripled to score two more. Katlyn Baron singled home Windorski for the fifth Hornet run.

After a scoreless second inning by both teams, Big Lake blew the game wide open in the third with 13 runs. The inning got off to a good start with three singles, a walk, and a Buffalo error scored the first four runs. Then the Hornets rattled off 10 consecutive hits, scoring nine more and giving Big Lake an 18-2 lead.

Buffalo would score three in the top of the fourth, forcing Big Lake to bat again needing just two more runs to end the game due to mercy rule. Taylor Menke reached on an error to lead off the inning, then Nohrenberg blasted a two-run game winning home run.

Tschritter finished 3-4 with a double and four RBI. Windorski went 2-3 with a triple and four RBI. Ava Prosser, Tessa Fjone, and Baron each had two hits and two RBI. Macy Bowne had two hits and an RBI. Maddie Wilson scored twice and had an RBI. Katie Chaffee had one and walked twice.

Vs. Forest Lake

On Monday the team lost 4-3 at Forest Lake. The Hornets had only four hits in the game but were tied until the Rangers scored the go ahead run with two outs in the sixth.

Big Lake got on the board first in the top of the third. Prosser and Fjone had back-to-back singles, and Tschritter brought home Prosser with a ground out. The Rangers took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Big Lake answered right back in the fourth.

Trailing 2-1 with two outs in the top of the fourth, Desi Dudek reached on an error. Then Baron doubled to bring her home and tie the game back up. One batter later, Chaffee singled to score Baron and take a 3-2 lead for the Hornets. Forest Lake retied the game at three with a run in the bottom of the fourth.

The score stayed that way until the Rangers pushed across, what would be, the game winning run in the sixth. The Hornets were unable to score in the seventh and the Rangers held on for a 4-3 victory.
