Hornets slug their way to win over Magic

Big Lake softball went 1-1 last week in a pair of Mississippi 8 Conference games. They defeated Monticello on Friday and were defeated by Princeton at home on Tuesday.

Vs. Magic

The Hornets used a big fifth inning to defeat Monticello 10-8 last Friday. The team got on the board early with back-to-back home runs by Katlyn Baron and Sam Nohrenberg in the top of the second. But they saw their lead evaporate quickly as the Magic scored five runs over the next two innings.

Trailing 5-2 heading into the fifth inning, Big Lake exploded for six runs to retake the lead. Ava Prosser got the team started with a one-out single then three Magic errors and a hit by pitch scored three runs for the Hornets. With the game tied at five, Nohrenberg stepped up with two runners on and blasted her second home run of the day to take an 8-5 lead.

Monticello answered right back to tie the game up at eight heading into the sixth inning. In the top half of the inning Tess Fjone led off the inning with a single and Desi Dudek walked one batter later. With two outs Kamrynn Tschritter singled to center field and scored two runs to give Big Lake a 10-8 lead. The Hornets wouldn’t relinquish the lead this time as they held on for a two-run victory.

Vs. Tigers

On Tuesday the team lost 7-3 to Princeton in extra innings.

The Tigers built a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, there the Hornets got on the board when Prosser singled home Nohrenberg to pull within two runs. Big Lake didn’t stop there as they scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. Tschritter singled with one out and Dudek bunted her over to second. Then back-to-back singles by Alyssa Windorski and Baron scored two to even the game at three.

Neither team scored in the seventh. Then, in the top of the eighth, the Tigers scored four runs, helped by two Hornet errors. Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Big Lake managed to put one runner on but was unable to do anything else. Prosser, Nohrenberg, Windorski, and Tschritter all had two hits for the team.
