Big Lake track and field athletes did well at the Final Countdown meet at Monticello last Tuesday.
The meet is an opportunity for coaches to decide which of their athletes will compete in specific events in the section meet as the season approaches its conclusion. Some relay and distance events were not included in the meet.
Big Lake’s most impressive performance came from junior Abe Nebo, who won the triple jump with a leap of 44’9.5”. That puts him in second place on the school’s All Time Top 10 list and is the longest jump by a Big Laker since Taylor Otto went 45’5.25” in 2011.
Leah Uphoff continues to shine in the hurdle events. The 10th grader finished second in the 110 hurdles in 17.16. She was also sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 32’8”.
Kamal Bille finished third in the boys 110 hurdles in 16.92 seconds, the fastest time for Big Lake this season. He took fifth in the 400 meters in 54.56.
Tayla Gassman won three events. She went 31.74 in the wheelchair 100 meters, threw the shot put 18’2.5” and the discus 41’7”.
Big Lake finished 2-3 in the 800 meters behind Gavin Flavin (2:09.58) and Judd Layton (2:10.12).
Alayna Boe cleared 8’6” to take second in the pole vault.
Ninth-grader Eli Henning ran the 1600 meters in 4:51.26 and was fifth. Theo Johnson was a few steps back in seventh in 4:58.94.
Naomi Huizenga placed fifth in the long jump at 15’5” and was fifth in the triple jump at 33’4”.
Evan Blackman finished eighth in the shot put at 41’1/2”.
Chaz Hughes threw the discus 107’6” and was 10th, with Blackman 11th at 105’10”.
Greta Schwirtz had the team’s best throw in the shot put at 27’6” and the discus at 81’4”.
Jerry Vazquez went 5’9” in the high jump to take sixth.
The Section 5AA meet takes place May 27 and 29 at Monticello High School.
