Hornets lose to #1 Bulldogs

The Big Lake football team lost 42-6 last Friday night in Becker.

The Bulldogs showed why they are the top ranked team in Class AAAA as they raced out to a 21-0 lead after just one quarter. The Hornets were unable to generate much offense and were plagued by turnovers all night.

Despite the 21-point margin at the end of the quarter, the Hornets stopped Becker on their opening drive of the night. But Big Lake gave the ball back two plays later after an interception. After falling behind 14-0, the Hornets lost a fumble on their first play of the ensuing drive. The opening quarter closed with a Big Lake fumble on a kickoff return.

The Hornets weren’t able to get anything else going until late in the fourth quarter when they capitalized on a Bulldog turnover. Big Lake took over deep in Becker territory after they recovered a bad snap. Two plays later, Carson Gellerman found Owen Wilczek from 15 yards out for the first Hornet touchdown of the night.

Next up for the team is a trip to Zimmerman for the short week. The Thunder are 4-3 and coming off a two-point loss against Mound Westonka. The game will take place on Wed., Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
