Last Thursday, the Big Lake Hornet football team hosted the Chisago Lakes Wildcats and lost despite scoring first.
Early in the first quarter, Hornet RB Hayden Thieke took a handoff from QB Tyler Anderson from the Chisago Lakes 25 yard line and scampered into the end zone to put the home team by a TD. Unfortunately, the extra point attempt failed but things looked bright with the Hornets denting the scoreboard first at 6-0.
Chisago Lakes wasted little time as they marched the field and punched in a three-yard run to tie the game and their kicker converted their extra point attempt and the Hornets were looking at a deficit.
That look remained for the rest of the game.
In the second quarter, the Wildcats tallied three scores to go up 26-6 when they scored from 10 yards out, then two yards out (failed two-point conversion), then from 12 yards out (another failed two-point conversion).
Things did not improve in the second half other than the Hornets not giving up four or more touchdowns as Chisago Lakes managed just one score — a seven-yard dash to pay dirt in the third to bring the score to 34-6.
Anderson finished the contest completing four of nine passes for 54 yards and two interceptions. Rieley Mullen gained 98 yards on the ground on 10 carries.
Bretton Bordwell had a great game on defense, tallying four tackles (including one for a loss) and assisting on 12 other tackles. Mullen had two tackles and 13 assists and Johnny O’Brien had two tackles and nine assists.
Jonah Mallberg had one interception and Jonah Blackman recovered the lone Wildcat fumble.
Big Lake had 32 total plays compared to Chisago Lake’s 67. The Hornets had 180 total yards while the Wildcats had 340. Big Lake finished with eight first downs while Chisago Lakes had 22.
The Hornets were not penalized in the game while Chisago Lakes committed eight sins for 45 yards.
