The Big Lake boys football team once again gave their all in last Friday’s game against Providence Academy. Despite the tremendous effort — especially in the second half — Providence was able to escape with the win, 24-14.
Big Lake’s offense was able to move the ball well throughout the game, outgaining the Lions and finishing with 345 yards between a balanced run-pass attack.
Dillon Spaeth went 15-for-22 passing, finishing with 157 yards through the air. Caleb Martin was his top target once again, finishing with eight catches and 52 yards. Jackson LaRoche and Jack Midas also added a few explosive receptions of 30+ yards.
Carter Stromberg was a force to be reckoned with on the ground, finishing the evening with 129 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
The Hornet defense also had a strong performance, led by senior linebacker Liam Mettler, who finished the game with a total of 4.5 tackles for loss. Alex John and Josh Dupre both flew around the field, finishing with a team-high eight tackles each. Sophomore linebacker Danny Rotz also had a nice interception, as the defense put up a great fight.
Ultimately, it was the turnover differential that largely led to the outcome, as the Hornets turned the ball over four times, compared to Providence’s one.
The Hornets have a short week this week, as they prepare for the regular season finale at home this Wednesday against a strong Willmar team. The coaches and players hope to see the stands filled as they celebrate their 2026 senior class in their final home game at Hornet Stadium.
