Hornets do well at M8 Conference track meet

The Big Lake boys placed fifth at the Mississippi 8 Conference Track and Field Meet at Big Lake last Wednesday.

The boys won three individual titles and had one relay victory.

Owen Layton set a new conference record and won the 3200 meters in 9:25.4.

Jack Leuer won the 800 meters in 2:04.53 and finished second in the 1600 in 4:27.81.

Carson Kunz took first in the high jump, clearing six feet even.

Kade Layton was third in the 3200 meters in 9:53.65. Tanon Jacobson finished fifth in 10:21.03.

Spencer Vold cleared 12’6” to take fifth in the pole vault and finished sixth in the 800 meters in 2:09.55.

Riley Thompson threw the discus 133’6” to finish fifth and moved to #7 on Big Lake’s Top 10 list.

The 4x800 relay team of Vold, Jacobson, Kade Layton and Owen Layton won in 8:22.13.

The 4x200 team of Wuoson Nehwah, Kyle Ginther, Ben Sellner and CJ Mikely finished fourth, but their time of 1:33.91 was just a second off the school record.

Overall, the boys had six All Conference and nine Honorable Mention performances, along with 17 personal bests.

For the girls, Tayla Gassman won four wheelchair events and set personal records in the shot put (18’1.5”) and discus (35’3”).

Erin Kjellberg set a personal record and finished fifth in the 400 meters in 64.89 seconds.  Carmen Herrera also set a personal best in the event at 68.97.

Alivia Voss cleared 4’8” in the high jump to take eighth and receive Honorable Mention.

Grace McCrone got Honorable Mention and had a season’s best of 16’3” in the long jump.

Three Hornets set personal bests in the 200 meters: Ava Eastman (27.81), Sydney Roy (28.67) and Arrianna Wagner (30.20).

Grace Olson set a personal best in the shot put at 27’5.5”.

Hailey Anderson had the top throw in the discus for Big Lake at 76’10”.

The 4x200 team of Addison Holmen, Voss, McCrone and Eastman ran 1:55.29, a season’s best.

The 4x400 team of Raina White, Voss, Sydney Roy and Leah Uphoff had a season’s best time of 4:43.82.

The 4x800 team of Emilee Doperalski, Lexi Kapsner, Rylie Ostrom and Campbell Slattery had a season’s best time of 11:30.69.

The Hornets competed in the section champions meet Wednesday and Friday, results next week.
