The Big Lake Hornet harriers traveled to Becker to compete in their invitational and preview the Section 5AA Championship course last Tuesday.
The team had another great weather day and took advantage of it with some great runs.
“The middle school and JV season are quickly approaching the end, and so it is great to see so many of the runners really hitting their stride,” said Hornet Head Coach Todd Trutna. “Our training has been going great and our runners just keep getting stronger. Our varsity runners made a lot of mental notes to use when we compete on this course again at the end of October.”
The varsity girls took seventh place as a team and were again led by sophomore Emilee Doperalski in 25th place with a time of 22:39. Freshmen Campbell Slattery and Erin Kjellberg were the next across the line for the Hornets. They were followed by Samantha Burton, Rylie Ostrom, Nicole Rempel, and Jadyn Rust.
The JV girls team finished in fifth place as a team. Olivia Potter had one her best races of the year in the JV girls race. Olivia’s time would have put her into Big Lake’s top five varsity runners. Georgia Morris also ran well, breaking out of the pack early and leading many Hornets to move out of their comfort zones and push the pace.
The boy’s varsity team took another team title, beating their Monticello rivals 36-51. Senior Christian Noble ran a strong race and had the individual win, a 10th of a second in front of teammate Owen Layton in second. Junior Kade Layton and Freshman Jack Leuer also finished in the top 10 with fifth and ninth place finishes. David Guyse and Tannon Jacobson were both in the top 20 which helped to seal the win for the Hornets.
In the JV race, Luke Hugo had his best race of the season and finished in fourth place. Carter Erickson and Matthew Denzen were the other two Hornets in the top 20 of the JV race. Isaiah Prom also had a great race and finished with a PR by over a minute.
The boys JV team finished in third place as a team.
The Big Lake Middle School team finished third as a team.
Alton Ahamed finished in second place overall with Gavin Flavin also finishing in the top 10. Trent Erickson finished 15th.
