Hornets capture gold at state meet

Two Big Lake athletes came home with double gold for their performances at the State AA Track & Field Meet last week at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

Jack Leuer repeated as State Class 2A champion in the 800 meter run. He ran 1:54.93 in his preliminary heat, then topped the field in the finals in a time of 1:53.00, edging Bjorn Anderson of Perham by .10 seconds.

He won the 1600 meters and tied the Class 2A record in a time of 4:11.25, again edging Bjorn Anderson by .71 seconds.

Leuer’s teammate Owen Layton won last year in 4:13.54. Leuer broke his own school record in both events.

Tayla Gassman repeated as the state champion in two wheelchair events.

The junior took first place in the shot put with a throw of 18’10.5”.

And she set a new Class 2A record in the discus with a throw of 46’5”, surpassing her own Class 2A record she set last year by more than six feet.

Abe Nebo qualified for two events at the state meet, but did not place in the top 10 in either event. The junior went 21’6.5” in the long jump and 41’11” in the triple jump, taking 11th in both events.

The boys 4x800 relay team of Trent Erickson, Judd Layton, Gavin Flavin and Theo Johnson did not finish in the top 10 spots in their race. Their time was 8:26.10. All four runners will be back next season looking to make it to the state meet again.
