The Big Lake boys soccer team will have a few obstacles to overcome this season on their quest to be successful.
The Hornets have a lot of new faces and a new coach, Michael Green, who was with Watertown-Mayer for the past four seasons.
The team has four seniors and three juniors, but only a handful of players have varsity experience. Half the roster is made up of seventh to ninth graders.
“The challenges so far are low numbers and a few injuries already,” says Coach Green. “We have a lot of potential, but we have a small team.”
Not as many individuals tried out for soccer this season, so there isn’t enough for a JV squad.
The team has three captains - goalkeeper Tyler Huver, Will Priest and Landon Priest. All three contributed last season and they’ll help guide the younger players this season as they continue to work on conditioning and learning positioning.
Coach Green says he sees a lot of bright spots so far.
“Our strength is our shared determination to compete and to work hard,” he says. “They are focused and committed.”
The Hornets opened the season with a 5-2 loss to Legacy Christian Academy. They were scheduled to play St. Croix Prep, Hutchinson and Sibley East this past week. They visit Zimmerman Tuesday and host Cambridge-Isanti 7 p.m. Thursday.
