Last Wednesday, the Big Lake Hornet football team lost their regular season finale, 42-36 at Zimmerman.
The second quarter was the difference in the game as the two teams entered tied at 14. However, Zimmerman would go on to score three touchdowns to take a 34-14 lead into halftime.
Despite facing multiple 20-point deficits, the Hornets mounted a late comeback that fell just short.
The Thunder struck first just minutes into the game, but Big Lake responded with two scores of their own. The first was an eight-yard touchdown run by quarterback Carson Gellerman. Then Montell Hester broke loose for a 43-yard score and a 14-6 lead.
From there it was all Zimmerman for the rest of the half. The opponents scored four unanswered touchdowns to take a 34-14 lead into the break.
Neither team was able to find the end zone in the third quarter, but Big Lake’s Jose Acuna scored from 24 yards out a minute into the fourth to cut the deficit to 34-22.
The Thunder responded with a touchdown of their own to extend their lead back to 20. Big Lake scored twice in the final few minutes on passes from Gellerman to Jack Midas and Reid Josewski. However, it wasn’t enough, with the Hornets falling 42-36.
Gellerman finished the day 12 for 25 with 208 yards passing and three touchdowns. He added 64 yards and a score on the ground. Hester had 53 rushing yards and a touchdown. Midas caught three passes for 54 yards and a score. Acuna had 43 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Defensively, Braedyn Wemple was the team’s leading tackler with nine.
