Hornet baseball team wins 2 of 3

The Big Lake baseball team won two games and lost one over the past week

Vs. Annandale

The Hornets exploded for 13 runs last Friday and beat Annandale, 13-2 on the road.

They got single runs in each of the first three innings, then added three more in the fourth.

The Cardinals managed to get two runs off Big Lake pitcher Owen Wilczek in the fifth, but it was their only offense in the game.

The Hornets got three more runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh, partly as the result of fielding miscues by Annandale. The Cardinals had five errors in the game.

Wilczek went the distance and allowed two runs on three hits, walked none and struck out 12.

Trenton Throolin led the offense with four hits, three RBIs, a walk and two runs scored. Jackson LaRoche had three hits, a walk and drove in a run. Brendan Goedker had two hits, two walks, drove in three runs and scored four times. Caleb Martin had two hits, two walks, drove in a run and scored three.

Vs. Chisago Lakes

Last Tuesday the Hornets beat Chisago Lakes in a back-and-forth game, 6-5 on the road.

The Wildcats scored an unearned run in the first off Big  Lake starter Jackson LaRoche.

The Hornets tied the game with a run in the second, but Chisago Lakes got another unearned run in the home second for a 2-1  lead.

Big Lake batted around in the fifth and scored five runs with the help of some fielding errors and took a 6-1 lead.

But the Wildcats chipped away at the lead and scored two runs in the home fifth and another in the sixth off reliever  Goedker.

Wilczek came in to get the final out in the sixth and retired the Wildcats in the seventh for the save.

On the mound, LaRoche allowed two unearned runs and just one hit in two innings. He walked three and struck out four.

Goedker allowed three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings. He walked five and struck out five.

On offense, Throolin singled and drove in two runs. Wilczek  had two hits, a walk, scored a run and drove in one. Cooper Cusick, Martin and LaRoche each had a hit.

Vs. Becker

A week earlier (April 24) the Hornets took an early lead but couldn’t hold on in a 6-5 loss to Becker.

Big Lake jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, then added a run in the third for a 5-0 lead.

But The Bulldogs reached Big Lake starter Wilczek for three runs in the home third and two more in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.

It stayed that way until Becker scored a run without a hit in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Wilczek allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out 13.

Goedker walked three batters in the seventh in relief and took the loss.

At the plate, Martin singled, drove in two runs and scored one. Conner Lundquist doubled, drove in a run and scored one. Wilczek and Throolin each singled and drove in a run. Goedker,  Cusick and  LaRoche each had a hit.

The Hornets are 5-3 in the conference and 6-3 overall. They were scheduled to play Zimmerman, Foley and Sauk Rapids-Rice over the past week, results next week.
