The Big Lake Baseball Team had two more wins over the past week.
Hornets 8, Thunder 1
Last Tuesday the Hornets got an outstanding pitching performance from Jackson LaRoche and lots of run support from the offense in an 8-1 win over Zimmerman.
The Thunder got their only run off LaRoche in the first inning on two hits.
Big Lake came back with three runs in the third inning and kept the lead the rest of the way. They added a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Meanwhile, LaRoche took control and there was never a doubt about the outcome. In his six innings of work, he allowed one run on three hits and a walk. He struck out 13. Bill Bilben pitched a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts to end the game.
At the plate, LaRoche had three hits, including two doubles. Conner Lundquist had three hits and scored a run. Caleb Martin and Connor Cusick each had two hits and scored a run. Owen Wilczek singled and stole two bases.
Hornets 6, Magic 5
Last Wednesday, the Hornets rallied in the last inning and beat Monticello, 6-5.
The Magic took the lead with two runs off in the second inning off Big Lake starter Owen Wilczek.
The Hornets came right back in the home second with four runs to take the lead.
The game stayed that way until Monticello tied the game in the sixth with two more runs.
Brendan Goedker came in to pitch in the seventh and the Magic scored an unearned run to take the lead.
But the Hornets came back again and scored two runs for the win.
Wilczek allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks in 6.1 innings. He struck out 10.
Goedker got the win in relief. He allowed an unearned run on one hit and struck out a batter.
At the plate, Goedker had three hits, scored two runs and had an RBI. LaRoche had two doubles and drove in two runs. Lundquist doubled, scored a run and drove in one. Austin Schleif singled, walked and drove in a run. Cusick doubled and scored a run. Martin Singled, stole a base and scored a run.
Saints 5, Hornets 2
Monday, the Hornets suffered their second loss of the season to St. Francis, 5-2.
The Saints opened the scoring with a run off Big Lake starter Jackson LaRoche in the second inning.
Big Lake evened the score with a run in the home second, then took the lead with another run in the third.
The Saints tied the game in the top of the sixth off LaRoche, and Caleb Martin came in to get the final out of the inning without allowing any more runs to score.
But it was a different story in the seventh when St. Francis scored three unearned runs off Martin to pull ahead.
The Hornets failed to score in the home seventh and lost, 5-2.
LaRoche allowed two earned runs on five hits and five walks. He struck out 10. Martin took the loss. He allowed three unearned runs on one hit and three walks. He struck out two.
On offense, Schleif had two hits and drove in a run. Cusick had two hits, including a double. Blayne Varner singled and scored a run.
The Hornets are 4-2 on the season. They played Becker Thursday, results next week. They visit Chisago Lakes Tuesday and host Cambridge-Isanti Thursday at 7 p.m.
