Gymnasts Look Sluggish, But Pull Out Close Win

The Becker gymnastics team - coming off a week where school was cancelled twice along with practices  - looked a bit rusty as they competed against Rush Lake/Pine City Hinckley-Finlanson (RPHF) Thursday at home.

The Bulldogs pulled out the win, 135.45 - 129.575.

“It was an up-and-down evening for us,” said Head Coach Jen Harmoning.  “You don't want to use it as an excuse, but it was certainly not easy for the gymnasts to miss so many days of practice and then compete right away.”

Harmoning said her team needs to increase the level of intensity going forward.

“Basically, this meet had the conference championship on the line and I didn't see my team show up ready to compete hard for it,” she said.  “Lucky for us, RPHF seemed to struggle in the same way and we came up with the win anyway.”   The coach said going forward, every meet will be a big meet.

“The team will have to show up ready to compete hard,” she continued.  “We still have so many small and large things we can fix.  We are nowhere near our capacity yet.  That's exciting, but it's time now to go after it.  If we don't start doing it now, it will be too late.”

Harmoning and her coaching staff will be working all next week to gear up for the Granite Ridge Conference Championships that begin Feb. 8 at the Becker Fieldhouse.

“All-Conference awards are up for grabs and this meet counts double,” she said.  “We're going to be ready to compete hard.”
