The Becker boys and girls golf teams have finally found some sunny weather conditions at their recent meets, with the girls continuing to dominate the conference and the boys finding their footing after a rough start to the year.
Girls
Coach Anna Babler and the Bulldogs continue to dismantle the competition at the Mississippi 8 Conference meets, with the most recent win happening Tuesday afternoon at Pebble Creek in Becker.
Becker fired an outstanding round of 365 to again capture the conference meet win, with Chisago Lakes coming in a distant second place with 386 strokes.
“These ladies did great,” Babler said. “ A personal best for Ashley Reed and Kylee Rick in the conference win.”
Reed shot a round of 86, good enough for second place overall, while Rick shot a 91, good enough for third place. Overall, Becker had six golfers place among the top 13 M8 golfers in attendance.
Tuesday results: Ashley Reed 86 (second overall), Kylee Rick 91 (third), Gretchen Graftaas 93 (fifth), Emma Benson 95 (eighth), Alexa Voller 95 (ninth), Layla Mathews 98 (13th).
At their current pace, the Bulldogs are a near lock to claim the overall Mississippi 8 regular season title. They have upcoming matches in St. Francis, Cambridge and Park Rapids. Look for complete details in next week’s Patriot.
Boys
Last Wednesday, the boys team traveled to St. Francis and the Refuge course for a M8 battle and came away with a sixth place finish and a team round of 348.
Princeton paced the M8 pack with a very good round of 312, followed by Big Lake at 329.
“We finally had some good weather for golf,” coach Dan Olson said. “It was nice to be able to be at the course and not wearing rain or winter gear.”
Zach Stanz continues to shine for the Bulldogs, as he led the team with a four over round of 76, good enough for second place overall. Princeton’s Lucas Ostlund fired a 74 to pick up the win for the Tigers.
While the sixth place finish maybe wasn’t what Olson had hoped, he is seeing constant improvement from his golfers. He also pointed out the difficulty of the Saints’ home course.
“The Refuge has trouble on every hole and each player had a few holes that really hurt their round,” Olson said. “We get a week of practice as our next meet is not until next Thursday (May 6) when we are at Pebble Creek.”
Results: Zach Stanz 76, Brayden Graning 88, Tucker Rhodes 91, Matthew Martindale 93, Kyle Vogl 93, Kevin Vogl 96.
