Girls golf sharp early

Despite battling cold and windy weather conditions, the Becker girls golf team had a successful opening match as they hosted a competition last Thursday at Pebble Creek Golf Club.

Head Coach Anna Babler was impressed with the opening match, as her girls placed third overall as a team, scoring 363 total strokes.

“The girls did awesome and exceeded my expectations,” Babler said.  “It was the first meet of the season and the weather was less than ideal.”

Detroit Lakes took the win in the 12 team competition with 345 strokes, while STMA finished in second, just 4 strokes better than the Bulldogs as 359.

“Detroit Lakes and STMA are tough teams to beat — they have grown and improved so much over the last two years,” Babler added.

Ashley Reed led Becker with an overall score of 89 (44 front 9 and 45 back 9), while 8th grader Layla Mathews fired a 90 (43 front 9 and 47 back 9).

Becker scores:  Gretchen Graftaas 93, Ashley Reed 89 (6th place overall), Layla Mathews 90 (9th place overall), Kylee Rick 103, Emma Benson 91, Alexa Voller 100.

Both the girls and boys team were scheduled to tee off on Tuesday, but those matches were postponed until later in the season.

As always, parents and sports fans are encouraged to check the mississippi8.org website for up to date schedules, cancellations and postponements.

Thursday, the boys were scheduled to host a competition at Pebble Creek, while the girls were to travel to Monticello.
