The Becker Lady Bulldogs basketball team continued their exceptional season by easily rolling over two more opponents this week to improve to 21-4, 11-0.
Becker 64, Foley 33
The Bulldogs got 21 points from Megan Gamble to go with her six rebounds and four steals to stomp the Falcons by 31 Tuesday on the road.
Gamble was dominant at both ends of the floor as Becker’s depth at all positions continues to cause matchup problems for their adversaries.
Julia Bengtson added 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Adeline Kent contributed 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
Becker shot 44% from the floor with only 12 turnovers. Foley shot 32% with 33 turnovers.
“Foley had a hard time handling our pressure, and it was mostly in the half court man,” said Becker Head Coach Dan Baird. “Defensively we played well. Offensively we struggled as we were tired from playing Como Park the previous night.”
Foley was led by Abby Mazacek with eight.
Becker scoring: Gamble 21, Bengtson 15, Kent 11, Maren Westin 7, Dani Nuest 6, Ayla Brown 2 and Alayna Lindquist 2.
Foley scoring: Mazacen 8, Cassy Teff 6, Jayden Hermanson 6, Landrie Walz 4, Alaina Hageman 4, McKenna Gross 3 and Callie Teff 2.
Becker 101, Como Park 86
The Bulldogs got a huge victory over ranked St. Paul Como Park Monday at home.
This contest featured the top two scoring teams in Class AAA, with Como averaging 81.6 and Becker second at 73.0. However, on this evening it was Becker that was more difficult to stop, breaking a girls' school record by scoring 101 points.
Both teams shot extremely well with Becker tallying 51% for the game and hit 9-of-18 (50%) from the three-point line. Como shot 48% and 10-for-20 (50%) from the three-point line.
Como Park had 26 turnovers to Becker's 15 in this fast paced contest and that proved to be the difference.
“Como wasn't used to playing against teams that can run with them and force that kind of ball pressure defensively,” said Baird. “Their guards usually have their way with opponents, however ours were ready for the task. I was very proud of our girls.”
Baird said his girls seemed to win the 50/50 balls and out-rebounded them 40-35.
“Scoring 101 points was nice, but we left some points out there going 20-for-34 from the line,” Baird said. “This is something we need to improve on as we've been struggling from the foul line as of late.”
Como’s KK Asberry scored 19 points, had seven rebounds, and five assists to lead Como.
“Jules (Bengtson) continues to excel against D-1 point guards as KK is one of the best in the state,” said Baird. “But (Bengtson) probably got the better of this incredible matchup.”
Ronnie Porter, another standout guard, had 17 points, four assists, and four steals. Jada James scored 13 points and had nine rebounds.
For Becker, Megan Gamble did a great job containing Jada James especially on the boards, holding James below her season average of 13.1 rebounds per game. Gamble scored 15 points to go with eight boards, making James work for everything.
Adeline Kent led Becker in scoring with 26 points and four rebounds.
“Adeline attacked the heart of Como's defense all night as she seemed like the quickest girl on the court,” said Baird. “Como wasn't expecting her speed and athleticism. They couldn't keep her in front.”
Bengtson scored 25 points, had six rebounds, eight assists, and three steals while excelling on defense against one of the best players in the state. Alayna Lindquist had her best game of the season, scoring 11 points, dishing out nine assists, grabbing six rebounds to go with five steals.
“You can tell Alayna loves the fast paced action and flourishes in this type of NBA pace,” said Becker’s head coach. “It’s where she can use her skills in the open court. AAU has really helped her in this department.”
Lexi Masog came off the bench and hit three huge three-pointers, providing a spark and stopping potential runs.
“This was a great team win by our girls,” said Baird. “The crowd was loud, active, and packed and provided a great atmosphere for our team. It was just a special night!”
Ayla Brown, an eighth grader for Becker came off the bench and scored seven crucial points while subbing for injured Courtney Nuest.
“Ayla played poised in a tough atmosphere and went 3-for-3 from the field,” said Baird. “Great job Ayla!”
Como Park fell to 20-2 with the loss. This game featured two of the youngest teams in the state as well. Becker starts four sophomores and one freshman.
Como is even younger starting three freshman, one sophomore and one eighth grader.
Becker scoring: Kent 26, Bengtson 25, Gamble 15, Lindquist 11, Masog 9 Brown 7, Dani Nuest 6 and Courtney Nuest 2.
Como scoring: Asberry 19, Porter 17, Dinnea Riley 17, Jada James 13, Shania Nichols 11, Shakyla Walker 7 and Smith 2.
