Gellerman wins 189AA state title

Big Lake’s Carson Gellerman won the 189AA title at the state wrestling tournament last weekend.

The senior won all four of his matches and finished the season with a perfect 43-0 record.

Gellerman opened the tournament with a 21-5 tech fall over Jordan Akkerman (21-17) of Fridley at 1:24. He followed that with a 21-4 tech fall over Caleb Koch (38-5) of Pierz at 2:28. In the semifinals, he beat  Max Morgan (45-5) of Mankato East by major decision, 13-3, the went on to beat Connor Plumski (43-6) of Albany, also by major decision, 13-1 to take the title.

It was Gellerman’s third trip to the state tournament. Last year he also won the section title at 189 pounds and went on to finish third at state and had a 36-7 season record.

As a sophomore, Gellerman took second at sections but did not place in the state tournament. He finished with a 30-12 record that season.

The other two Hornets who qualified for the tournament this year did not fare as well. At 133 pounds, senior Cash Stortz (37-6) lost his opening match to Aiden Friedrich (39-8) of Kassen-Mantorville, 13-6. When Friedrich lost his next match, Stortz was eliminated from the action.

At 152 pounds, senior Dallas Sibbet (34-14) lost his opening match to Antonio Salas (43-13) of Simley by pin at 2:15. Sibbet was eliminated when he lost his second match by pin to Warren Ritter (42-10) of Grand Rapids at 3:43.
