The Becker/Big Lake hockey team won three games last week, including an overtime thriller last Thursday against Moose Lake Area. The team then took down Windom and Mora/Milaca before losing to Prairie Centre on Tuesday.
Vs. Moose Lake
Moose Lake jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period, but the rest of the game would be all Eagles. Raymond Clark scored twice in the second period to bring the team within striking distance. Then in the third, Tate Spilde provided the tying score with just a few minutes remaining.
Overtime did not get off to a good start with the Eagles getting called for hooking less than two minutes into the extra session. But early in the penalty kill, the puck somehow found Tanner Felton surrounded by five Rebel skaters. Felton was able to find a narrow gap between the goalie and the pipe for a short-handed, short side OT winner.
Vs. Windom
On a short turnaround, the team headed south to Windom for a game last Friday night.
This time, however, it was the Eagles who raced out to an early lead before holding on for a 4-2 victory.
Gunnar Hanson scored twice in the first period for a 2-0 lead after one. The first coming off assists from Ethan Grafnitz and Nolan O’Neal, the second from Tanner Felton.
However, Windom stormed back with two goals of their own in the second to make the score even heading into the third.
After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless hockey, Grafnitz and Hanson connected with Owen Zahler for a power play goal. That would turn out to be all the Eagles needed, as Thomas Zerwas stopped every shot he faced in the final period. Garrett Marotz added some insurance later, also off assists from Grafnitz and Hanson.
Vs. Mora/Milaca
On Monday, the Eagles took down Mora/Milaca 6-3, in a penalty-filled game featuring a combined 15 trips to the penalty box between the two teams.
Becker/Big Lake once again got a strong showing from their penalty kill by successfully killing all five of Mustang power plays. Including those five chances, the Eagles went a perfect 13 for 13 on penalty kill opportunities during their three-game win streak.
Much like Thursday night against Moose Lake, the team found themselves behind 2-0 early in the game. From there, Becker/Big Lake dominated the remaining time, scoring six unanswered goals. Tate Spilde got the Eagles on the board with a power play goal with an assist from Raymond Clark. Then Owen Zahler tied the game up at two before the end of the first off assists from Tanner Felton and Gunnar Hanson.
Spilde gave Becker/Big Lake the lead in the second with an unassisted short-handed goal. The third period saw goals from Garrett Marotz and Felton before Spilde completed the hat trick with his third goal of the game. Providing assists were Noal O’Neal, Blayne Varner, Carter Tatge, and Titus Borkoski.
Vs. Prairie Centre
On Tuesday, the Eagles returned home and lost 6-4 against Prairie Centre.
