The Becker/Big Lake hockey team saw their season come to an end in the Section 5A quarterfinals with an 8-0 loss to #1 seeded Monticello. The Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals after a 6-3 victory over Mora/Milaca in a play-in game last Saturday.
Against the Mustangs, the Eagles got on the board quickly with a Raymond Clark power play goal off assists from Ethan Grafnitz and Tanner Felton. The lead wouldn’t last long as Mora/Milaca scored two goals later in the period to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The second period was dominated by the Eagles as they scored two goals to retake the lead and outshot their opponent 18-5. The first goal of the period was scored by Gunnar Hanson with help from Grafnitz and Owen Zahler. And less than two minutes later Garrett Marotz found the back of the net for his own goal off a pass from Gavin Leitold.
The start of the third period saw Becker/Big Lake extend their lead with another goal from Marotz. However, the Mustangs answered back and brought the game back within just one goal. That would be the closest they would get as the Eagles scored twice more to secure the victory. Tate Spilde and Brant Rusin found Nolan O’Neal for the fifth goal, and then Spilde scored on an empty net to put the finishing touches on the win.
On Tuesday, the team fell 8-0 to top-seeded Monticello, who is ranked as the #5 team in the state for Class A.
The team ends the season with a record of 9-16-2.
