Eagles Hockey Secures #1 Spot In Conference

The Becker/Big Lake Eagles hockey team went 1-1-1 this week to remain in first place in the conference.

Becker 7, Legacy 0

Becker played Legacy Tuesday at the Super Rink in Blaine.

In the first period, the Eagles heavily out-shot Legacy 16-4 and ended the period with four goals, the first two came from Corbin Kollar (assists from Tyler Schmitt and Tyler Ruppelius), another came from Nate Kerzman on a feed from Jacob Boe and Kollar closed out the period with a hat trick by scoring again with an assist from Tyler Ruppelius.

The Eagles tacked on one more goal in the second  making the score 5-0.

In the third period, the Eagles scored two more goals to blow out Legacy. Becker tallied 48 shots on goal in the rout.

Sauk Rapids-Rice 4, Becker 2

Dec. 6, Becker/Big Lake traveled to Sauk Rapids to take on the Storm. This was the Eagle’s toughest opponent thus far.

The visitors got another great performance from goaltender Alec Anderson.

The Eagles got one of their goals from Austin Rydberg (assisted by Jacob Bahe). Sauk Rapids is loaded with seniors (11), and Eagles coach Doug Friedrichs was pleased with how his young players played, especially on defense.

Becker 4, Dodge County 4

Last Saturday, Becker/Big Lake played Dodge County in the “Stick It to Cancer” event. The ceremony consisted of the junior varsity and varsity teams both forming a cancer ribbon shape by holding candles on the ice while the lights in the arena were extinguished. The ceremony was fitting since many of the players know of people who have lost lives to cancer. One teammate, Tyler Ruppelius (#17), has survived cancer.

In the first period of the game, the Eagles took a  major penalty when Ethan Tobako checked a player from behind and received a ten minute sit in the box.

The undaunted Eagles proceeded to score shorthanded by Corbin Kollar unassisted.

A Dodge penalty later in the game led to an Eagles powerplay goal from Tyler Schmitt off a shot from Nate Kerzman. Tucker Rhodes would score five-hole with an assist to Trenton Rupar.

Dodge would score again to end period at 3-2.

It was a tight game in the third period until Dodge County scored to tie the game when an Eagles defender got caught on his heels and fell.

“The Eagles played a good game in which we should have won,” said Coach Jason Hartfiel. “Little miststeps and too many penalty minutes kept this game close.”

Big Lake B Squirts

The Big Lake Eagles Squirt B team took second place overall in the Neal Broten Squirt B Tournament in Roseau last week. They defeated Edina (8-1), Roseau (17-3) and Blaine (2-1), then lost the championship game to Hopkins.
